CSE - EPOCH Research Lab

The EPOCH Research Lab is dedicated to exploring how the design of technologies impact the lives of people, organizations, and communities, especially our youth. We use qualitative research approaches (e.g., interviewing, surveys, participatory design, ethnographic methods) to conduct research in the following topic areas: online safety and privacy, health and wellbeing, critical computing, broadening participation, and other related topics. For more info on our research visit our website: epochlab.org

----------

There are two core groups that make up EPOCH: research assistants and creative strategy assistants

Research assistants are students who have shown interest in research, can contribute to existing projects, and have an awareness of the history and/or context of an underserved community. They support the research team in conducting studies, advancing scientific knowledge, gathering data, and ensuring the research process runs smoothly. Typical skills include: Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, knowledge of research methodologies and techniques, effective communication and teamwork abilities, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.

This semester we are specifically looking for a strong programmer with some background in AI/ML/NLP. However, all students are welcome to apply.

Creative Strategy Assistants (visual designers, social media marketers, event planners, etc.) support the development and execution of creative and strategic initiatives for the lab–especially as it relates to engaging with the public. This role is a blend of creativity and analysis, helping align innovative ideas with the administration and productivity of the lab. Typical skills include: Ability to think outside the box and generate original ideas, strong verbal and written skills for collaboration and presenting ideas, organizational skills, familiarity with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Web design.

This semester we are looking for someone interested in web design and development. However, all students are welcome to apply.

Being a part of this lab is an amazing opportunity to work on human-computer interaction research problems that can address the unique needs of individuals from some of the most underserved communities around the world.
