CSE - SaNDwich Lab: Human-AI Interactions

SaNDwich Lab in the Department Computer Science and Engineering offers research opportunities in the broad area of human-AI interaction. We use human-centered methods to design, build, and study interactive systems to empower individuals to create, configure, and extend AI-powered computing systems. Our recent work seeks to address the societal challenges in the future of work through a bottom-up human-AI collaborative approach that helps individual workers automate and augment their tasks with AI systems.

Our work spans across many application domains e.g., creativity support, future of work, usable privacy, data analysis tools, developer tools, AI for education, and AI in healthcare. Check out https://toby.li/ for our latest work.

Students need to be strong programmers. Some background in AI/ML/NLP or HCI is a plus. Alternatively, we also consider candidates with strong design and/or qualitative social science research skills (e.g., interviewing, surveys, ethnographic methods)
